In a previous edition of 'ARE YOU AN ALPINE SNOWBOARDER?' I promised a discussion of the 4th 'interface'...

Board to Snow
The interface between snowboard and snow is often the least understood and most neglected! Because we're unable to change the condition of the snow we ride on, we'll have to concentrate on the base and edge of the snowboard for this discussion.
A well tuned board will not only help you improve your technique, but will open up some of the trails that sometimes seem off limits to you. How often have you been at the hill early in the morning, marvelled at the calibre of your riding, only to have it all go away as the conditions turn to brushed off ice patches in the afternoon? It's these conditions (and those found around the gates of a racecourse) that demand a properly prepared base, wax, and sharp edges.

Before you begin to tune your board yourself, we highly recommend you read the following article, written by an expert in board and ski tuning: KUU Sports - Ski and Board Tuning Manual

And after reading that, you're likely going to need tools from one of these companies:
KUU Sports
Reliable Racing
Tognar Toolworks

So now you're equipped to start preparing the 4th interface. All it takes is a little practice and you'll be enjoying those afternoon ice patches.
